Much of how game is doing depends of player feedback and what devs decide to do with it,, and the more players are giving feedback the more reliable it is.
I had private server of my own for few months, and i know for a fact that 90% never visit forum... so you are getting feedback only from 10% max
motivating players to visit forum would grant more chance of getting feedback from them and therefore better understanding what players like and what they dont
